- <p> DIED. Emerson Foote, 85, advertising leader and foe of
- cigarette ads; in Carmel, N.Y. As president of Foote, Cone &
- Belding in 1948, Foote dropped the $12 million American Tobacco
- account. In 1964 he quit as chairman of McCann-Erickson because
- he was opposed to handling cigarette clients. "I am always
- amused," he once said, "by the suggestion that advertising, a
- function that has been shown to increase consumption of
- virtually every other product, somehow miraculously fails to
- work for tobacco products."
